Preliminary Fights shown on Spike live for first time ever

UFC 103

For the first time ever, the UFC will air the preliminary fights leading up to the main card for UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort.

This I believe is a great marketing technique to draw more pay-per-view buys for the main card.  We have seen this tactic before in another genius entrepreneur, Vince McMahon, CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment. Read the rest of this entry »

Josh Barnett Tested Against Fedor in Affliction Trilogy

July 19th, 2009 by dave

Josh Barnett's big test comes August 1st when he participates in the headliner main event against current WAMMA champion Fedor Emelianenko. If you haven't heard of Josh I am quite surprised.  The 6'3", 255 pound, Barnett has quite a resume in Mixed Martial Arts.   Nicknamed the baby-faced assassin, he touts a respectible 24-5-0 record. Five by way of Knock out and 15 by submission.  Josh became the youngest UFC champion in 2002 by defeating Randy Couture. Barnett also paved his way by winning against names like Aleksander Emelianenko by Keylock submission, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the Open weight Grand Prix semi finals.

Now on Saturday August 1, 2009 Josh Barnett will face the biggest challenge of his life by taking on the the last emperor, Fedor Emelianenko.  Fedor is viewed by almost anyone who knows what MMA is about as the best heavyweight MMA fighter around today.  Fedor is virtually undefeated after over 30 professional MMA fights.  His only "official" loss was due to an elbow cut on the forehead and the doctor stops the fight 17 seconds in to the first round.  As you can see below, bodog is giving big favorite odds to Fedor. Bodog is also speculating if Fedor wins against Barnett it sets up a Brock Lesnar fight down the road.  You know this is already in the works.  At least I think it is.

July 11th 2009 - Ultimate Fighting Championships 100 -Las Vegas, Nevada
If you were betting with bodog the big payouts came with the Mark Coleman fight with a $100 wager gaining you $300.

I wanted Frank Mir to wipe the floor with Brock Lesnar but it didn't happen.  My man GSP held up against Thiago Alves.  Who are the next competitors for these great fighters?  My guess is that they will bring up Kimbo Slice to face Brock Lesnar and move George St. Pierre upto the next weight class to face Silva.  What do you think? Chime in and let me know. Read the rest of this entry »
