TUF 10 Heavyweights episode 3 | Kimbo vs Roy Nelson

Roy Nelson

The boards and forums are lit up today with the showing of last nights third installment of TUF 10 Heavyweights.  As said in the show the card could have been a big payday for both fighters had they been on a pay-per-view.  This match up has been hyped up all week from MMA fans all over the globe giving their opinion of the outcome.

The winner by TKO, Roy “Big Country” Nelson.  Roy won this fight by shear experience.  He did the same thing in both rounds to capitalize on Kimbo’s weakness, the ground.  Standing toe to toe with Kimbo looking for the opportunity to shoot and get the takedown.  On the ground, Roy used his experience to exploit Kimbo Slice’s novice Jiu Jitsu grappling skills by pinning his arms with his legs and striking the top of the head.

Referee Herb Dean gave Kimbo plenty of time to recover and attempt some sort of defense but that never came and Dean was forced to stop the fight after repeated strikes to Kimbo’s melon giving Nelson the victory.

Although, this wasn’t the most glamorous fight as it was supposed to be it still gave us a look at the weaknesses of both fighters that the other contestants should be taking note at this point of the competition.  They both are the most inflated names in this season’s roster and anyone that can step into the cage and take either of them out probably has the best chance of the over all win of the contract.

Kimbo’s weaknesses are obvious to most fighters.  Get him on the ground and beat him with grappling and submission techniques.  Watch out though, its clear that is his focus is to improve these skills.  I just don’t think he can improve in such a short amount of time.

Roy on the other hand, I think he will gas out in later rounds of a sanctioned fight.  Commented by Rampage, that belly is big.  It can smother you on the ground and take away your breathing patterns but it still can be taken advantage of with enough body strikes.

As they alluded to last night, Kimbo is not done.  He will most likely be stepping in for an injured contestant to get another chance at the contract.  Kimbo’s next fight now is to stay alive in the competition and with all of the promotion done so far Dana is not going to let him off that easy.

With the hype of Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson out of the way we should get a better viewing of the rest of the fighters and see if they have what it takes to be the next Ultimate Fighter Heavyweight winner.

What part of the ground training should Kimbo be focusing on next?
